YDSA has three grades of professional membership, reflecting the level of expertise and experience our surveyors and designers have in the industry.
It is mandatory for all members to hold Professional Indemnity Insurance and Public Liability insurance for the protection of their clients and themselves.
Code of Practice and Code of Conduct
A Code of Practice and a Code of Conduct are provided to act as guidelines to members and their clients.
Full Membership (MYDSA)
A Full Member is a senior member of the Association, who will typically have an area of specialisation and who may well undertake Expert Witness and other litigation work.
Full membership is achieved by submission of 2 surveys representing the range of work as an Accredited member.
Accredited Membership (AYDSA)
Becoming an Accredited Member is achieved through passing the in-house examination and submission of 2 full condition surveys for assessment (or equivalent in the case of a member who is specialising in a particular area). Those who have achieved Accredited Member level may apply to become Coding surveyors, providing they have good knowledge of the Codes and stability.
Affiliate member is the entry level grade of professional membership and is for those who are fairly new to surveying, but who have a good knowledge of small craft from working in other areas of the industry over a number of years.
Applicants provide 2 full condition or pre-purchase surveys for assessment, together with two professional references.
Membership is given for those materials submitted in the application and for all grades of membership, members may submit surveys in additional materials to those already submitted so they can extend their materials range.
Other Membership and Recognition
Fellowships are awarded for services to the Association by a member who is still a practising surveyor or designer at a grade of Accredited or Full Member. Fellowships are conferred by the members once a year at our AGM.
Honorary memberships are awarded for services to the Association for someone who is has now retired from practice or who has assisted the Association in some special way. Honorary Memberships are conferred by the members once a year at our AGM.
Those who successfully complete a recognised course, or who are in the early stages of becoming surveyors and have Professional Indemnity Insurance, may apply to become a Trainee. This is free of charge for one year with a basic fee for years 2 and 3 whilst working to upgrade to an Affiliate member.
Benefits of being a Trainee with the YDSA include attending YDSA events at the discounted member rate.
Trainee membership is not a grade of membership but is a means for YDSA to encourage, promote and support a surveyor in the early days of their career. As such, advertising using the logo and letters YDSA is not permitted by Trainees.
Associate members are professional organisations or individuals who offer services which are complementary to the membership of YBDSA, such as marine insurance, law, finance or in technical areas. Associates are listed on our websites and are welcome at Association events at the discounted member rate.
