YDSA Certifying Authority

Certifying Authority Department Head and Technical Auditor

The Company and Associations

The Yacht Brokers, Designers and Surveyors Association (YBDSA) is a management and holdings company formed to provide organizational, advisory and secretariat services to two self-determining and long-established members associations: the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA) and the Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA).

The organization’s income is derived from a variety of sources including the certification of small commercial vessels. The association’s Certifying Authority (CA) department is a discrete business unit operating within the YBDSA organization and manages the inspection and certification of these vessels on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

The Role

The YBDSA are seeking a new department head with maritime experience and expertise to manage their Certifying Authority business unit. The role’s two principal duties are to supervise the department and to apply specialist technical knowledge in the auditing of certification applications, but it will also involve significant participation in the day-to-day operations of the department.
This is a newly created position in a small but growing department and it will impact the roles of its existing valued and experienced staff, consultants and association member surveyors. The successful candidate must demonstrate their ability to efficiently direct, focus and streamline the department’s activities while applying a respectful management style.

The business unit is busy and ambitious for growth, and the innovation and implementation of improved business systems and practices will be crucial to the department’s continuing success.
Accuracy, productivity, timely internal and external communications and the confident provision of unambiguous expert advice to staff, clients and other stakeholders are central to the role.
Professional and regular liaison with an elected committee of senior surveyors, the MCA and other certifying authorities and government agencies along with continual awareness of changes to legislation and applicable regulations are critical.

Candidate Attributes

• Maritime technical or engineering qualifications
• Marine surveying or comparable experience
• Specific knowledge of MCA codes and vessel stability and safety
• History of working with similar industry codes and inspections
• Understanding of auditing practices
• Sound human, departmental and business resource management
• First-class communication and self-presentation
• Modern IT skills
