Northern Forum: A Valuable Gathering for Marine Professionals
Published: 12 March 2025
The first Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA) Northern Forum of 2025 was held on Thursday, March 6, at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum, marking another successful and insightful gathering for marine surveyors, designers, brokers, and other professionals in the marine industry. This biannual event, which has been a key fixture for over 21 years, takes place on the first Thursday in March and November and continues to serve as a platform for professional development and training within the marine sector.
A Day Full of Expertise
The March 2025 Forum featured four sessions, all delivered by industry experts, offering attendees a comprehensive look at various aspects that should be considered in the marine surveying, design, installation and brokerage industry.
The day kicked off with Tony Ingram from Morso UK, who gave attendees a fascinating insight into the rich history of this esteemed Danish stove manufacturer. Tony’s presentation not only highlighted the company’s legacy but also provided practical information on stove design, installation, and troubleshooting, helping marine professionals better understand the appliances they work with. For those who own a stove, it offered great information on how to one safely and efficiently.
Next, YDSA member Paul Smith took the stage to deliver a detailed presentation on BS 8511:2010, the Code of Practice for the installation of solid fuel heating and cooking appliances in small craft. This session was especially beneficial for those involved in the inspection and installation of such appliances, guiding attendees through the correct and safe installation processes.
After a well-deserved lunch break, YDSA member Mike Carter led a session on risk assessments. While risk assessments may seem daunting, Mike’s engaging presentation made the topic more understandable, showing how completing risk assessments can be a valuable and necessary part of ensuring safety within the industry.
The final afternoon session was presented by YDSA member Justin Green, who led an interactive discussion on vessel valuations. The session encouraged lively debate and exchange of ideas among the attendees, providing valuable insights into the complexities of valuing vessels.
More Than Just Presentations
As with all YDSA Northern Forums, while the presentations themselves were highly informative, the additional benefit of attending was the peer-to-peer discussions that emerged between attendees. The open debates fostered an environment of collaboration and knowledge-sharing, providing even more value than the scheduled sessions. The presenters did a fantastic job of keeping the sessions on track, ensuring everyone had an opportunity to contribute to the discussions.
Looking Ahead
For those who missed out, it’s time to mark your calendars. The next YDSA Northern Forum is scheduled for Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum (National Waterways Museum). As always, the event will feature expert led presentations and discussions covering various aspects of marine surveying, boating, and more. The forum remains open to both members and non-members, offering excellent opportunities for networking, professional development, and ongoing continuous professional development.
